Wyoming youth hockey is built around a statewide network of community associations, where players can begin at the grassroots level and progress into league, tournament and higher-level development opportunities. The distances between hockey communities make local programs especially important, while statewide and regional competition connects players from across Wyoming.
How youth hockey is organized in Wyoming
The Wyoming Amateur Hockey Association is the state’s USA Hockey governing body. WAHA reports more than 3,000 players, coaches and volunteers, with 12 local associations, 61 statewide local teams and 10 Team Wyoming teams. Its emphasis is grassroots hockey and the development of programs throughout the state.
Finding a local youth program
Wyoming families can find association hockey in communities including Jackson, Gillette, Casper, Cheyenne, Cody, Laramie, Rock Springs, Sheridan and others. Local programs provide the regular practices and games that form the foundation of a player’s development.
Jackson Youth Hockey, for example, enrolls more than 200 players each season and has served local players since 1989. Its current 2026-27 program welcomes players ages 4-19 from first-time skaters through advanced competitors, with practices and home games at Snow King Sports and Events Center.
Hockey for different ages and skill levels
The Gillette Hockey Association offers hockey from 6U through 18U and describes its program as open to all skill levels. That type of age-based association structure gives families a clear progression as players gain skating ability, game experience and confidence.
Statewide and regional competition
Wyoming’s hockey geography naturally creates travel. Families considering a competitive team should understand practice expectations, league travel and tournament weekends before committing. The benefit is exposure to opponents from different communities and the chance to build experience beyond a player’s home rink.
Casper’s 2026-27 John Wold Cup is one example of tournament hockey in the state, with high school varsity and junior varsity competition scheduled for October 9-11, 2026 and a 12U A weekend scheduled for January 1-3, 2027 at Casper Ice Arena.
Player development beyond the local team
WAHA also supports statewide development opportunities. Its current structure includes Team Wyoming teams and player-development programming, giving motivated players another pathway alongside their home associations.
Choosing the right Wyoming hockey path
For new players, the best starting point is usually the nearest association and an age-appropriate beginner opportunity. As skills develop, families can evaluate league and travel options based on coaching, useful ice time, roster role, cost and the amount of driving required.
YouthHockeyCenter can help families discover Wyoming clubs, rinks, training, tournaments and events while directing them to the organizations responsible for current registration and scheduling.
Wyoming’s youth-hockey community combines local identity with statewide competition. A player can start in a community program, develop through regular association hockey and pursue broader competitive opportunities as experience and goals grow.
